MAMMA MIA! at Bournemouth Pavilion – review

This was my first time seeing MAMMA MIA! and I loved it. Everyone knows the music, and loads of people have seen the film, but there’s nothing like seeing it live on stage. It’s funny, it’s emotional, and it takes you from the story into a full-on concert-style finale that had the whole theatre on its feet.

The audience were loving the show. You’d hear the odd person trying not to sing along… but every now and again someone would be quietly mumbling the words a bit out of tune. Not enough to be annoying — it just showed how much everyone loves the music.

Performances

Rosie Glossop (Rosie) and Sarah Earnshaw (Tanya) were phenomenal — great vocals and very funny.

Lydia Hunt (Sophie) was the standout performer for me. Stunning vocals, and she played the role perfectly.

You couldn’t fault any of the cast. Every single member was simply brilliant.

A professional moment mid-show

There was a brief show stop at the opening of Act 2 which was handled really professionally. When the curtain came back up a few minutes later, the audience erupted with applause.

Special mention: local talent

A special mention for Maisy Wignall — a local girl who performed on the Pavilion stage before as a child and is now touring the UK with this phenomenal musical. Seeing her centre front with that energy and sharp execution in the dancing must have been a very proud moment for her family. We’re really excited to see what’s next for her and we wish her all the best.
