Free Low Vision Day to support people living with sight loss across Dorset

People living with sight loss across Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and the rest of Dorset, along with their families, friends and carers, are being invited to a free event that brings together advice, technology and specialist support, all under one roof.

Dorset Blind Association’s annual Low Vision Day will take place on Saturday 21 November from 10am to 2pm at The Dorford Centre in Dorchester.

The event will feature healthcare professionals, local support organisations and specialist exhibitors, giving visitors the opportunity to learn more about the practical help available to people living with visual impairment.

Technology helping people live more independently

One of the highlights of this year’s event will be a live demonstration of Meta smart glasses by Vision Express Dorchester.

The demonstration will explore how wearable AI technology is creating new possibilities for people with visual impairments and how it could be used to support greater independence in everyday life.

Visitors will also be able to explore a range of low vision aids and assistive technology, as well as speak directly with Dorset Blind Association’s Community Support Workers.

Latest advances in macular treatment

Consultant Ophthalmologist Lucy Howe will also be joining the event to discuss the latest advances in the treatment of macular conditions.

Her talk will be followed by an interactive Q&A focusing on Age-related Macular Degeneration, giving visitors the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the condition.

Bringing support together in one place

Leah Cross, Community Support Manager at Dorset Blind Association, said many people are unaware of just how much support is available following a diagnosis of sight loss.

She said the event provides an opportunity to discover practical equipment, meet experts, experience new technology and find out about services available locally, all in one place.

The event is being sponsored by Dorset-based Ridgewater Energy.

Managing Director Peter Bywater said the company was proud to support an event connecting local people with advice, technology and services that could make a positive difference to their everyday lives.

Who can attend?

Low Vision Day is open to anyone affected by sight loss, including family members, friends and carers.

Healthcare professionals who would like to learn more about the support and services available across Dorset are also welcome to attend.

Admission is completely free and no booking is required.
