Plans for the transformation have now been revealed following work between BCP Council, Diverse Abilities and local children, young people and families.
The new-look play area will include wheelchair-accessible equipment, sensory features, water play and a huge playboat inspired by Hamworthy’s maritime heritage.
Four new play zones
The redesigned play area will be divided into four key zones, creating different spaces for children with a wide range of ages, needs and abilities.
At the centre will be a wheelchair-ramped playboat, complete with sensory equipment on its deck and double and triple slides.
Families will also find eight different swings, including a Me-to-You swing designed to allow children and carers to play alongside one another.
Other additions will include:
- A wheelchair-transferable roundabout
- Accessible water play
- An inclusive playhouse
- Accessible picnic seating
- Swings and slides
- Sensory and interactive equipment
A quieter space for sensory play
A dedicated sensory and quiet area will also be created away from the busier sections of the playground.
Designed to offer a calmer environment, the space will include communication and Braille panels, multi-sensory activities, a sheltered playhouse, storytelling chair and interactive rain wheel.
The designs have been developed with input from Diverse Abilities, alongside local families and children, to help make sure accessibility is considered throughout the new space.
“A space where every child feels welcome”
Cllr Andy Hadley, BCP Council’s Portfolio Holder for Parks, said Hamworthy Park holds a special place in the hearts of local families.
He said inclusivity had been central to the project from the beginning, with families, children and specialist accessibility organisations helping to shape the final plans.
Clare Rochford, Short Breaks Manager at Diverse Abilities, also welcomed the investment, saying access to inclusive play and community spaces can make a significant difference to children with disabilities.
She said the charity hopes the new playground will give more families the opportunity to play, connect and enjoy the outdoors together.
Part of 4.6 million investment in local play areas
The Hamworthy Park refurbishment forms part of BCP Council’s wider Plan for Play improvement programme.
More than 4.6 million is being invested in approximately 100 play areas across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
Nearly 20 key locations are set to receive major refurbishments, while dozens of other play areas will benefit from new equipment, repairs and smaller improvements.
Cllr Sandra Moore, BCP Council’s Portfolio Holder for Play Strategy, said the Hamworthy design reflects the aim of creating high-quality, accessible and inclusive spaces for children and young people.
Work on the £190,000 Hamworthy Park transformation is expected to get underway in the coming weeks.
