Poole restaurant launches competition to find the Champion Sausage Roll
If you love a sausage roll (and honestly… who doesn’t?), there’s a brand-new community event coming to Poole that sounds like a brilliant evening out — and it’s all for a great local cause.
The Ultimate Sausage Roll challenge lands in Penn Hill
Jenkins & Sons Restaurant & Bar in Penn Hill, Poole is hosting a fun competition to find the Ultimate Sausage Roll, inviting local home bakers to bring their best creations for a chance to impress a panel of judges.
The event takes place on Saturday 6 June, and it’s raising money for the Dorset Cancer Care Foundation (DCCF) — a charity that provides financial support to Dorset people affected by cancer.
How to enter
Thinking of rolling up your sleeves and getting involved? Here’s what you need to know:
- Sausage rolls must be 10–12 inches long
- They must be intact and not sliced
- Any pastry and savoury flavours are welcome
- They must include some kind of original design
- Entry costs £5 (sausage rolls should be brought baked and ready for judging)
Organiser Claire Shpachynska from The Hello Project said the idea was to create a community event that celebrates the venue’s foodie roots (Jenkins & Sons was originally a butcher and fishmonger) while raising money for a local charity.
What’s happening on the night
Even if you’re not entering, you can still come along and enjoy the atmosphere.
The evening begins at 5pm, with all the sausage rolls displayed before being cut up for tasting. Judging takes place at 5.30pm, and there’ll also be a public vote, so you can have your say on who deserves the Champion title.
It’s also set to be a proper night out, with:
- Live music
- A raffle
- A portion of bar sales donated by Jenkins & Sons
And the judging panel is expected to include some well-known faces, including former contestants from Bake Off and MasterChef.
Supporting Dorset families through DCCF
Eve Thomas, joint founder of the Dorset Cancer Care Foundation, said the charity was “absolutely bowled over” by the event and hopes lots of people will enter and come along — knowing the money raised will go directly to Dorset families facing financial hardship because of cancer.
DCCF awards non-returnable grants to Dorset people who are struggling financially due to cancer.
