Fancy Giving Writing a Go?

Bournemouth Writing Festival starts 24 April — fancy giving writing a go?

If you’ve ever thought, “I’d love to write… but I don’t know where to start,” Bournemouth Writing Festival is basically made for you.

Kicking off on 24 April, the festival brings Bournemouth town centre to life with 100+ free and ticketed events across multiple venues — from talks and workshops to walks, panels and plenty of chances to meet other people who love stories.

Whether you’re already scribbling away on a novel, you’re curious about journalling, or you’ve got an idea for a book that’s been sat in your head for years… there’ll be something to spark that first (or next) step.

What’s on?

Think of it as a choose-your-own-adventure weekend for anyone who likes words:

  • Talks, walks, workshops and panels
  • Networking opportunities (without the awkwardness — everyone’s there for the same reason)
  • Events for complete beginners through to experienced writers

And it’s not just one venue — the festival is spread across some brilliant spots in town.

Where is it happening?

You’ll find events across Bournemouth Town Centre, including:

  • Pavilion Dance (the main festival hub)
  • Patch in Bobbys
  • Russell-Cotes Museum
  • Palace Court Theatre

Free things you can drop into

If you love the idea of getting involved without committing to a ticket straight away, there are loads of free options.

Free Poetry Marquee (all weekend)

Head to the FREE poetry marquee in Horseshoe Common for:

  • Drop-in activities
  • Free performances from professional poets
  • Sets from local poetry collectives

All weekend — so you can pop in whenever it suits.

Free children’s activities (Saturday)

Got little ones who love stories (or need a nudge away from screens)? There are FREE children’s activities at Patch on Saturday designed to inspire kids to write.

“Writing isn’t really my thing…” — still come along

Even if you don’t see yourself as a writer, there are two evening events that are more like a proper night out — created with local universities and both happening at Pavilion Dance.

Saturday evening

Tongue Fu — a live improvisation band performing alongside comedic poets and special guests.

Sunday evening

A unique performance pairing live dancers with poetry and stories, featuring special guests Ashley Hickson-Lovence and BAFTA-award winning poet Dean Atta.

A festival with heart

One of the best things about Bournemouth Writing Festival is how inclusive it is. Alongside the headline events, there are additional highlights including:

  • Writing activities for people with dementia at Russell-Cotes Museum
  • Writing on the beach
  • Free workshops for people experiencing homelessness
  • Sessions designed for those with additional needs

Book your tickets (and plan your weekend)

If you’re even slightly tempted, have a look at the programme and pick a couple of events that jump out — you might surprise yourself.

If you go along, let us know what you see (and what you’d recommend) — and if you end up writing something, we’d love to hear about that too.
